IN a moment destined to echo through the corridors of golfing history, Christiaan Maas has etched his name into the sport’s golden archives, becoming the first African golfer to lift the World Team Amateur Championship (WATC) individual trophy, while guiding South Africa to a triumph that crowns them as the first African nation ever to conquer the world stage in this prestigious event, winning the 2025 edition at Tanah Merah Country Club in Singapore.
For South Africa, this win transcends sport. It is the culmination of decades of perseverance. The South African team’s journey has been defined by grit, talent and quiet determination, and now, the green and gold shine brighter than ever before on golf’s grandest amateur stage. On the team leaderboard, South Africa’s maiden Eisenhower Trophy triumph, following close calls in the past in 1970, 1972 and 1980, was a result of yet another dominant show, an eight-shot lead. On the final round on Saturday, Maas carded three-under-par 69 to finish on an overall 22-under-par 266 with second placed Declan O’Donovan from Australia carding 12-under-par 276. Maas had opened the tournament back to back 66s on round one and two before going on to shoot 65 on moving day, performances that all but sealed the title. Maas’ closing round featured five birdies and two bogeys. He picked up a birdie on the fifth hole, followed by a bogey on the seventh and another birdie on the ninth. After the turn, he added another birdie on hole number 10 followed by a bogey on the 12th and a birdie on the 13th. He closed the round off in spectacular fashion, with a birdie on the 18th to conquer the world. Daniel Bennett, signed for a closing level-par 72 to finish tied for eighth on seven-under-par 281. His round featured two birdies and as many bogeys. In his opening three rounds, Bennett had scores of 73, 69 and 67. The other member of the history-making South African team, Charl Barnard finished tied for position 95 on 15-over-par 303. He had round scores of 75, 76, 75, 77. On the team leaderboard, South Africa conquered the world with a score of 29-under-par 547 as second placed Australia finished on 21-under-par 555. South Africa had round scores of 139, 135, 132 and 141 in a tournament in which the two lowest scores from the team contributed to the side’s total for the day.
As the final putt dropped and history was sealed, the magnitude of the moment became clear. This was not merely South Africa’s triumph, it was Africa’s. The world watched as Maas and South Africa lifted the hopes of millions, proving that excellence knows no borders, no limits, and no barriers of geography or history. Maas and South Africa’s names will forever be linked with a new dawn, one where Africa stands tall on the world’s fairways. And as the sun sets on this remarkable chapter, it rises anew over a continent inspired, its golfers dreaming bigger than ever before.
