AFTER firing the lowest round at the third edition of the R&A Africa Amateur Championship on Saturday at Royal Johannesburg, Dewan de Bruin said he was left speechless following his record-breaking performance.

The 17-year-old carded a magnificent 12-under-par 60 in the final round of the tournament, in the process setting a new course record at Royal Johannesburg.

The previous course record on the East Course was 63, achieved multiple times, including by Gary Player (1977 SA Open), Darren Fichardt (2008), Charl Schwartzel (2009), and Thomas Aiken (2014). A 62 was recorded by Martin Maritz in 2011, but with placing, while the West Course record is 61 by Charl Schwartzel in 2011. De Bruin described the feeling of his feat as surreal, adding that it has given him a massive confidence boost. “I'm quite speechless. I just felt like I was floating almost and wasn't there on the course. I was just enjoying it, playing some good golf. Birdies came and that's how all this happened. “It's a real confidence boost I must say. It's a surreal experience, and just now I know my game is there and I know what I can do and I know I can play. I mean, I've been struggling a bit to get a low round in for the last couple of months so this brought some joy,” he said. De Bruin said he also enjoyed his time at Royal Johannesburg. “Royal Johannesburg is an amazing course. It's lovely, greens are fabulous, fairways are great – you can't complain about anything here. This event is a great experience, you learn about everyone's culture, meet new people and make new friends. It's amazing overall,” said De Bruin. During his explosive round, De Bruin picked up 10 birdies and an eagle. On the front nine he made birdies at the first, third, eighth and ninth for an outward 33. After the turn he went on a remarkable run of five consecutive birdies from holes 11 to 15. He added another birdie at the 17th and capped it with an eagle on the 18th for a superb inward 27. De Bruin tied for second place at the championship on 15-under-par 273 alongside Charl Barnard and Ivan Verster, while Jack Buchanan claimed the title on 21-under-par 267.
