KIERON van Wyk surged into contention at the Cell C Challenge in Honour of Gary Player after a brilliant performance on moving day, saying he felt like the legendary nine-time major champion himself.
Speaking after his sublime round, Van Wyk said he was proud of his performance and felt like Gary Player on the greens, a display that has thrust him into contention for victory at the first Sunshine Tour event of the year. “I felt like Gary Player on the greens today. I was able to get the putter rolling pretty quickly and just saw myself making a bunch of birdies. “I haven’t been hitting the ball that well, but I found something on the range which I knew I was going to bring into my game today. I struggled a little over the first three holes, but I made a good up-and-down on the fourth and from there it was pretty much open gates. I was able to see the lines really well today and rolled the putts exactly where I was looking," Van Wyk, via the Sunshine Tour. He added: “I knew I needed a low round to get into contention, and now that I’ve done that, I know my game can stay at that level for the final round. I’m excited. I didn’t think it would come this early in the new year, but I’m excited for the opportunity.” Van Wyk made pars on his first four holes of the front nine before picking up birdies at the fifth, eighth and ninth for an outward 32. After the turn, he made back-to-back birdies at the 10th and 11th, then added further birdies at the 13th, 15th and 18th for an inward 30.
He heads into Sunday’s final round on 11-under-par 199, tied with Benjamin Follett-Smith.
