A BRILLIANT, flawless second-round seven-under-par 65 has propelled Jack Buchanan to the top of the leaderboard at the R&A Africa Amateur Championship, while Lisa Coetzer has maintained her lead at the Women’s Invitational at Royal Johannesburg.

Buchanan, on 11-under-par 133, now holds a two-shot lead over fellow South African and first-round overnight leader Ivan Verster, who is on nine-under-par 135. Coetzer, meanwhile, holds a three-shot advantage over Lourenda Steyn.

“I got off to a decent start, birdieing three of the first five or six holes, so that was nice. Then I just continued the momentum, hitting the ball close and finding fairways. It was good to make that many birdies in a round of golf for a change. There are still two more rounds to go, but I’m swinging it well and feeling good, so I’m excited for the last two rounds,” said Buchanan after the second round. The 21-year-old South African, who opened with a 68 on Wednesday, picked up three consecutive birdies at holes three, four and five before adding another at the seventh for an outward 33. After the turn, he added three more birdies at holes 12, 16 and 18. Verster, who held the opening-round lead with a 67, carded a 68 in the second round, including six birdies and two bogeys. Malan Potgieter and Andries van der Vyver share third place on six-under-par 138. In the Women’s Invitational, Coetzer followed her opening level-par 72 with another 72 in the second round. She sits on an overall level-par 144, while Steyn, who shot a 73 after opening with a 74, is on three-over-par 147. “I struggled through the front nine. I went birdie, bogey, bogey, so mentally it was tough to recover from that. But I got it right on the eighth hole with a birdie, and that helped build momentum going into the back nine and improve my score. “I want to spend some time on the range to see what’s going on because my irons were a bit off. Other than that, I’m feeling good and happy going into tomorrow,” said the 15-year-old Coetzer. Coetzer’s second round featured four birdies, at holes one, eight, 11 and 16, while she dropped shots at holes two, three, seven and 13. With Coetzer occupying the top spot, followed by Steyn, Gia Raad and Charlotte Millard share third place on six-over-par 150. The Africa Amateur Championship, now in its third year, aims to provide a platform for the continent’s finest amateur golfers. The champion will receive exemptions into The 154th Open at Royal Birkdale, The Amateur Championship, the Alfred Dunhill Championship, the Investec South African Open and the Waterfall City Tournament of Champions powered by Attacq.
