NJOROGE Kibugu made a solid start to the Sunshine Development Tour (SunDev) Absa Invitational Series – Karen Tour Final at Karen Country Club, as he took the lead at the top of the leaderboard after the opening round on Monday.

The Kenyan professional opened with a six-under-par 64 to claim a narrow one-stroke advantage over Celestin Nsanzuwera.

Kibugu’s opening round featured six birdies, two eagles and four bogeys. On the front nine, he birdied the first hole before enduring a mixed run. He dropped a shot at the sixth, recovered with a birdie at the seventh, and then bogeyed the eighth. He finished the outward nine with another birdie at the ninth for a 34. On the back nine, Kibugu birdied the 10th, bogeyed the 11th, and then made an eagle at the 12th before dropping another shot at the 13th. He followed that with a second eagle at the 14th, then closed strongly with back-to-back birdies at the 16th and 17th to post an inward 30. Second-placed Nsanzuwera carded eight birdies, one bogey and a double bogey in his round.
