A BIRDIE on the first hole of sudden death saw Deon Germishuys defeat Cole Stevens in a play-off to win the Stella Artois Players Championship at Glendower Golf Club on Sunday.
Germishuys and Stevens finished tied on 19-under-par 269 after four rounds, forcing a play-off, which the former won to claim his fourth Sunshine Tour title.
“I don’t have a very good record in playoffs. I’ve lost in one earlier this year so I wasn’t very positive going into this playoff. It’s very surreal. I can’t really explain it to anyone. As soon as the ball came off the clubface I knew it was exactly what I wanted to do but you never know as the wind swirls here on the 18th hole. When I saw it pitch and spin back to the hole it was just a lot of relief. But overall I played the back nine nicely and fought hard, my putter was also quite hot and that helped. I just stuck to the basics, stayed patient and got the deal done,” said Germishuys (via Sunshine Tour).
Germishuys went into the final round in third place, five shots behind leader Stevens, before carding a four-under-par 68 in the final round.
He started with a bogey on the first hole but recovered with a birdie on the seventh to reach the turn in level-par 36. He then produced a flawless back nine, picking up birdies on the 11th, 12th, 16th and 17th holes for an inward 32.
Stevens, who held the overnight lead, signed for a closing 73. He bogeyed the first hole before bouncing back with a birdie on the second.
However, further bogeys on the fourth, fifth and eighth holes left him struggling to maintain his advantage, although a birdie on the ninth saw him record an outward 38.
After the turn, Stevens endured a difficult start with a double bogey on the 10th. He responded with birdies on the 11th and 14th but dropped another shot on the 15th before closing with two birdies on the 16th and 17th for an inward 35.
Jonathan Broomhead finished third on 18-under-par 270, with Luke Brown taking fourth place on 16-under-par 272. Herman Loubser finished fifth on 15-under-par 273, while Malan Potgieter was sixth on 13-under-par 275.
Martin Rohwer claimed seventh place on 12-under-par 276, while Austin Bautista, Malcolm Mitchell, Rowan Lester, JJ Senekal and Graham van der Merwe shared eighth place on 11-under-par 277.
