FIVE South African golfers will be playing over the weekend after making the cut at The 154th Open Championship taking place at Royal Birkdale.

The five set to play the final 36 holes of golf’s oldest championship are Shaun Norris, Hennie du Plessis, MJ Daffue, Casey Jarvis and Aldrich Potgieter.

Norris, du Plessis and Daffue are tied for 38th on one-under-par 139, while Jarvis is one shot behind in a tie for 52nd on level-par 140. Potgieter is tied for 67th on one-over-par 141.

Veteran Norris opened the tournament with a one-under-par 69 on Thursday before carding a level-par 70 on Friday. He started the second round well with a flawless front nine, picking up birdies at the fifth and ninth for an outward 32. After the turn, he added two more birdies at the 11th and 12th before dropping shots at the 13th, 14th, 15th and 18th for an inward 38.

On his Open debut, du Plessis opened with a 70 before following it up with a 69. He bogeyed the fourth, picked up birdies at the fifth and seventh, before dropping another shot at the ninth for an outward 34. After the turn, he bogeyed the 12th but recovered with back-to-back birdies at the 14th and 15th for an inward 35.

Daffue started the tournament with a brilliant 67 before shooting a 72 in the second round on Friday. He did not have the best of outings on the front nine, making bogeys at the fourth, sixth and eighth while birdieing the seventh for an outward 37. On the back nine, he dropped shots at the 11th and 13th but recovered with birdies at the 14th, 16th and 17th for an inward 35.

Jarvis, who is also making his Open debut, started with a 73 on Thursday but recovered with a near-flawless 67 to make his second consecutive Major cut of the 2026 season.

His second-round 67 featured birdies at the first, fifth and eighth for an outward 31. After the turn, he added another birdie at the 16th but dropped a shot at the 18th for an inward 36.

The other South African to make the cut, Potgieter carded an opening 69 before following it up with a 72 in the second round. He made three bogeys at the third, fifth and eighth for an outward 37. On the back nine, he birdied the 10th, bogeyed the 13th and 15th, but recovered with an eagle at the 17th for an inward 35.

Jayden Schaper, Michael Hollick and amateur Jack Buchanan missed the cut, along with Zimbabwe’s Scott Vincent.

Australia’s Lucas Herbert leads the tournament on eight-under-par 132.
