SOUTH African Jack Buchanan produced a brilliant performance to secure a commanding six-shot victory at the third edition of the R&A Africa Amateur Championship at Royal Johannesburg on Saturday.
Buchanan will now tee it up alongside the world’s best golfers in The 154th Open at Royal Birkdale, while also earning exemptions into The Amateur Championship, the Alfred Dunhill Championship, the Investec South African Open and the Waterfall City Tournament of Champions powered by Attacq. Speaking after the win, Buchanan said it was an amazing feeling to have claimed the title, adding that the tournaments he has now qualified for make it even more special. “It feels great to get the job done this week. Any time you win, it’s really good, but to win a championship of this calibre really means a lot to me. It hasn’t sunk in yet, but it feels unreal to get into the events that you qualify for by winning this. Royal Johannesburg has been a great host this week and the course has been in unreal condition,” said Buchanan. Buchanan is also looking forward to playing in The 154th Open. “I believe the first Open that I went to was at Royal Birkdale in 2017, so to go back somewhere I visited as a child not too long ago is going to be really special. Kevin Na gave me a golf ball that he got a hole-in-one with in a practice round. Rickie Fowler gave me a signed glove. “My favourite golfer since I was a kid has been Rory McIlroy, so just to see him up close would be pretty cool. Obviously you have some of the South African names too,” he said. Going into the final round on Saturday holding a four-shot lead at the top, Buchanan had a flawless front nine. He made a birdie at the third, followed it up with an eagle at the sixth and another birdie at the eighth to turn in 33. After the turn, Buchanan added another birdie at the 10th, dropped a shot at the 15th and recovered with a birdie at the 16th for an inward 34. Previously, Buchanan had carded rounds of 68, 65 and 67. Meanwhile, de Bruin broke the course record with the championship’s lowest round, a magnificent 12-under-par 60. Now in its third year, the Africa Amateur Championship aims to provide a platform for the continent’s finest amateur golfers.
The Africa Amateur Championship and Africa Amateur Women’s Invitational were developed by The R&A to nurture talent and provide a pathway for the continent’s elite amateur golfers to the international stage.
