A BRILLIANT bogey-free four-under-par 66 helped South African professional Casey Jarvis secure a top-10 finish on his debut at The 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale on Sunday.

Jarvis finished the tournament tied for sixth on six-under-par 274, marking a memorable debut at golf’s oldest championship.

He climbed 23 places from the start of the final round and finished just four shots behind the winner, Ryan Fox. Starting the final round on two-under-par 208, Jarvis picked up two birdies on the front nine at the third and fifth holes to go out in 32.

After the turn, he added another birdie at the 11th before closing with a birdie at the 18th for an inward 34, finishing as the leading South African.

Earlier, Jarvis had carded rounds of 73, 67 and 68. He finished tied with Lucas Hébert and Si Woo Kim.

The other South Africans to make the cut were Hennie du Plessis, who finished tied for 46th on level-par 280, and Shaun Norris, who was tied for 53rd on one-over-par 281.

Aldrich Potgieter was a shot further back on two-over-par 282, tied for 59th, while MJ Daffue finished tied for 71st on six-over-par 286.

The winner, Fox, finished on 10-under-par 270, one shot ahead of runner-up Cameron Young. Sam Burns finished third on eight-under-par 272.
