SOUTH African Daniel Bennett is currently the highest-ranked African golfer on the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).

Bennett, who started playing golf at the age of 10, sits 10th in the rankings, making him the highest-ranked African golfer on the list.

He has a points average of 988.1964. The leading African amateur’s last counting event was the US Collegiate Golf-organised NCAA Division I Men’s National Championship – Match Play. At the Stroke Play Championship, held from 29 May to 1 June, Bennett, who attends the University of Texas in the United States of America (USA), finished tied for 65th after carding rounds of 77, 68, 74 and 76. His best finish of the year so far, according to WAGR, came at The Prestige Invitational in March, where he finished tied for seventh, five shots behind winner Ben Steinmann. The second highest-ranked African player on WAGR is Morocco’s Adam Bresnu. Bresnu, with a points average of 884.0265, is ranked 34th overall. His best finish of the year so far was a tie for second at The Prestige in the US Collegiate Golf series in February. The South African duo of Malan Potgieter and Jack Buchanan are the third and fourth highest-ranked African golfers on WAGR, respectively. Potgieter is ranked 67th on WAGR and is one of only three African players inside the top 100, alongside Bennett and Bresnu. He has a points average of 794.2259. Buchanan is ranked 121st with a points average of 712.7711. The fifth highest-ranked player from the continent is Uganda’s Joseph Cwinyaai, who occupies 167th position. Cwinyaai has a points average of 672.2969. Close behind Cwinyaai as the sixth highest-ranked African player is Zambia’s Michael Chuma, who is ranked 170th with a points average of 667.4061. Kenya’s Jay S Sandhu is ranked 192nd on WAGR and is the continent’s seventh highest-ranked player with a points average of 650.9485. The continent’s eighth highest-ranked player on WAGR is Morocco’s Ahmed Essalmi, who is ranked 250th with a points average of 621.9453. Completing the continent’s top 10 players on WAGR are Namibia’s Likius Nande in ninth and Réunion Island’s Rudy Sautron in 10th.

Nande is ranked 291st on WAGR with a points average of 604.4158, while Sautron is ranked 381st with a points average of 567.4687.
