HENNIE du Plessis described his fairytale victory at the Blu Label Unlimited Challenge at the Gary Player Country Club on Saturday as “a special moment”, marking his return to the game after spending over a year on the sidelines due to injury.
Having also recently become a father, this was his first win since 2018, when he claimed a team victory alongside Jean Hugo. He said having his family present at Sun City made the achievement even more meaningful. “I think that’s why golf seems a little bit easier now. It’s harder to be a parent, I can tell you that. I’m only joking. It’s been a long time since my last win. This is a special one, it’s a special place. I’ve got my family here and it’s such a special moment. “I put in the work to get back here. This was sort of a warm-up event to see where my game is at, and I’m very happy with the way I played, especially coming down the stretch. I had a few fumbles on the back nine and my caddie Zack (Rasego) just spoke to me and told me to stay focused and slow everything down. I started seeing and hitting better shots and made a few clutch putts. I think my game is a little bit better than the last time I played,” said du Plessis. Du Plessis collected 13 points in the first round and followed it up with 10 in the second. On moving day, he amassed an impressive 18 points before closing with eight points in the final round. Second-placed Michael finished with 35 points, while MJ Viljoen and Yurav Premlal shared third place on 33 points. The tournament coincided with the 36-hole Blu Label Unlimited Ladies Challenge, held at the Lost City Golf Course, which was won by Kaiyuree Moodley, her maiden professional title on three points, one ahead of Ivanna Samu.
The event was played using the Modified Stableford format, in which an albatross earns eight points, an eagle five, and a birdie two. A par scores zero, a bogey minus one, and a double bogey (or worse) minus three.
