SOUTH African professional golfer, Garrick Higgo shot a level-par-72 on the final round to win the 2025 Corales Puntacana Championship, at Punta Cana Resort & Golf Club Punta Canahis, his second victory on the PGA Tour. The 25 year old Higgo shot an overall 14-under-par-274 to register a one-stroke victory over Alejandro Tosti, Keith Mitchell, Jeremy Paul, Michael Thorbjornsen and Joel Dahmen who were tied for position two on 13-under-par-275.
He started the tournament on a high note with an impressive eight-under-par-64 in the first round which comprised nine birdies and just one bogey on the par-four fifth hole. In the second round, he carded a 68 which comprised six birdies and two bogeys to go into the third round on 12-under. His third round two-under-70 was made up of three birdies and one bogey on the par-five hole 14. On a windy day, he closed with a level-par-72 where he shot three birdies and as many bogeys, which was enough to see him jump to the top of the leaderboard and avoid a championship play-off. Higgo also won the 2021 Palmetto Championship at Congaree. He gained entry via a commissioner exemption reserved for foreign players. The win in 2021 offered him the opportunity to compete in every major, but he hasn’t qualified for any of them since 2022. With the gap between his victories, the left handed South African said hard work has paid off. “It has just been so much hard work over the last two years with my coach. My wife and family have been supportive. It’s just a lot of validation, I just think my game still has a lot of places to go. This week was a big step in the right direction but it’s been draining. But, you have to go through a lot of dips, there is a lot of dark places this game takes you to,” he said.
The Corales Puntacana Championship was his third PGA TOUR start of the season to go with four on the Korn Ferry Tour. However, at his most recent event, he finished one stroke outside a playoff at the Club Car Championship at the Landings Golf and Athletic Club.
