UGANDA’S history making professional, Ronald Rugumayo is off to a brilliant start at the 2025 Johnnie Walker Uganda Open Golf Championship having taken a two-shot lead after the first round at Lugazi Hills Golf and Country Club.

Rugumayo, fondly remembered for being the first Ugandan golfer to make the cut on the DP World Tour last year, carded an opening round four-under-par 67 on Wednesday.

The Uganda Golf Club member is two-strokes ahead of the Kenyan duo of Dismas Indiza and Mohit Mediratta who both carded two-under-par 69. Rugumayo’s opening round on the par-71 Lugazi Golf and Country Club course included seven birdies and three bogeys. He got his round off with a birdie on the par-four first hole and added another one on the par-three third hole. He, however, made back to back bogeys on the par-four fourth and fifth holes. Rugumayo then made another birdie on the par-five seventh hole for an outward 33. On the back nine, Rugumayo made back to back birdies on the par-five 10th and 11th holes. He dropped a shot on the par-three 15th hole but responded with back to back birdies on the par-five 16th and par-three 17th holes, closing with an inward 34.

The only other golfers to shoot under-par on round were amateur Anthony Otukei and Greg Snow who are tied for fourth place on one-under-par 70.
