SOUTHERN Guards GC will be chasing a historic win on home soil as they hold a two-shot lead at the top of the leaderboard following the conclusion of the third round at the LIV Golf League South Africa, taking place at The Club at Steyn City in Johannesburg.

The all-South African Southern Guards are on 60-under-par, two shots ahead of Fireballs GC and Torque GC, who share second place with just one round left to play on Sunday.

Southern Guards recorded a team score of 26-under-par in the third round on Saturday to move up the leaderboard. Speaking after the conclusion of the third round, Dean Burmester said he was at a loss for words to describe his emotions and is proud of the work that they have put in as a team. “It’s hard. It’s hard to put into words. I can tell you that first tee, I couldn’t feel my hands, feet, legs. I couldn’t feel a thing. It’s just amazing, walking on that tee, they say my name, and it’s just thousands of people. It’s something you’ve dreamt of your whole life, and especially to be at home, I think it makes it better. What a day. All four boys had a good day. It looks like all four of us scored well. For me, honestly, I’m so proud of all the guys, and for us to be in the hunt for the team thing is incredible,” said Burmester (via LIV Golf League). In round three, Southern Guards’ captain Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace carded identical seven-under-par 64s, with the skipper having a flawless round while Grace dropped a single shot. Burmester and Charl Schwartzel carded identical six-under-par 65s, with Burmester going bogey-free while Schwartzel dropped one shot. Oosthuizen’s round featured seven birdies, at numbers one, two, four, five, 10, 13 and 18, while Grace eagled the fourth, picking up birdies at numbers one, five, 10, 11, 17 and 18. He dropped a shot at the seventh. Burmester picked up six birdies in his round, at holes four, five, seven, 10, 16 and 18. Schwartzel picked up seven birdies, at numbers one, four, five, 10, 13, 15 and 18 while making a bogey at the 14th. With Southern Guards holding the team lead, Bryson DeChambeau holds the individual lead with a two-stroke advantage over Grace. DeChambeau is on 21-under-par, while Grace is on 19-under-par.

This is the first LIV Golf League event to be played on African soil, marking a monumental landmark for South Africa, and the Southern Guards go into Championship Sunday seeking a historic home win.
