SOUTH African professional Ryan Van Velzen put up a strong fight to secure his maiden HotelPlanner Tour title at the Challenge de España held at Isla Canela Links, Andalucía, Spain, on Sunday.

The 24-year-old finished on 17-under-par 267, securing a two-stroke victory over Dan Erickson and Wil Besseling, who both carded 15-under-par 269. It was also his first victory outside South Africa, having previously won two events on home soil on the Sunshine Tour.

Van Velzen said it was an amazing feeling to have won the tournament, adding that composure helped him when he thought he had lost it early in the final round. “This feels amazing. I started off badly today and thought I’d blown it but I kept myself composed and made a couple of birdies to keep myself in it and then was super solid on the back nine. “It was a bit of a shock to this system on the front nine; that nine has caught me out a couple of times this week. Level is normally a good score on that side, I think it’s a tougher nine. “I back myself on that back nine. You can go low there, and I was surprised nobody went low. It was nice to see where I was, I like seeing where I am on the leaderboard,” said Van Velzen (via HotelPlanner Tour). Van Velzen opened the tournament with a seven-under-par 64 and followed it up with a level-par 71. On moving day, he carded a brilliant, near-flawless eight-under-par 63, where he dropped just a single shot. The South African picked up birdies at the first, third, fifth, seventh and eighth holes, while dropping a shot at the ninth for an outward 31. He then had a flawless back nine, adding birdies at the 10th and 18th and an eagle at the 15th for an inward 32. He went into the final round holding a one-shot advantage over Erickson and Jamie Rutherford. On his front nine, he made a birdie at the first hole but dropped three shots at the second, fourth and fifth before adding two more birdies at the sixth and ninth for an outward 35. After the turn, he added two more birdies at the 13th and 15th for a flawless inward 34, carding a closing 69. Van Velzen said he is looking forward to the rest of the season. “The game is close to something really good and I’m excited to play next week in Switzerland and the rest of the season. This gives me a bit of leeway where I can maybe go and play some DP World Tour events if I have a few more good weeks out here, which will be good,” he said.

For the victory, he earned 320 Road to Mallorca points.
