FOLLOWING his one-stroke win at the DP World Tour PGTI Open held at Classic Golf & Country Club, Gurugram, Haryana, India, on Sunday, MJ Daffue has moved to the top of the Road to Mallorca Rankings.
He now has 640 points from five tournaments with two wins, while second-placed Will Enefer has 372.80 points. Daffue’s countryman, MJ Viljoen, dropped to third place with 355.60 points. Speaking after his win, Daffue said he was proud of the way he played. “I’m really pleased. The first one gets something off your back, but this time, I believed I could do it. I knew I was comfortable, and I have brought some momentum from the last few weeks. “I’ve been patient. I’ve been working with a sports psychologist, and my moto has been ‘dogged, determination and patience’ and that helped me out there,” said Daffue (via HotelPlanner Tour). Daffue opened the tournament in India with a two-under-par 70, where he made four birdies and two bogeys. He then followed it up with a brilliant bogey-free 11-under-par 61. In his second round, Daffue made birdies at holes one, two, five, six and nine for an outward 31. After the turn, he added six more birdies at numbers 11, 13, 14, 15, 17 and 18 for an inward 30. On moving day, he carded a five-under-par 67, picking up birdies at numbers three, six, seven, eight, nine, 10 and 15, while dropping shots at numbers five and eight. He then went on to the final round holding a four-shot lead and closed with a flawless three-under-par 69, enough to see him claim the championship. He made a birdie at the ninth and an eagle at the 14th. He finished on 21-under-par 267 while Saptak Talwar and Jhared Hack shared second place on 20-under-par 268. With Daffue, Enefer and Viljoen making up the top three on the rankings, South Africa’s Deon Germishuys and the USA’s Davis Bryant complete the top five with 305.78 and 232.9 points respectively.
The Road to Mallorca heads to Italy next for the Italian Challenge Open, taking place at Golf Nazionale from 7–10 May.
