At just 18 years old, Vincent Chidambazina has emerged as a beacon of resilience and hope in Zimbabwe's golfing community. A survivor of the devastating Cyclone Idai in 2019, Chidambazina has transformed personal tragedy into triumph, securing three significant victories in 2024. In March 2019, Cyclone Idai wreaked havoc across Southern Africa, particularly affecting Zimbabwe's Chimanimani district. The cyclone claimed over 300 lives in the area, including that of Chidambazina's friend, Trust Makanidzani. Miraculously, Chidambazina's family home was spared, situated just 100 meters from the flood's path.
While Chidambazina’s home was spared, the tragedy of losing friends, neighbors, and witnessing the destruction firsthand left a deep impact. However, instead of succumbing to the adversity, he channeled his grief and experience into something that would not only shape his future but inspire others along the way—his golf career.Despite the aftermath of the cyclone, Chidambazina found solace and focus in his love for golf. His perseverance and determination were evident as he began his climb to the top of Zimbabwean amateur golf. In 2024, he achieved three significant victories, cementing his status as one of Zimbabwe’s most promising young talents. Bulawayo Amateur: This victory marked a turning point in his career, proving to himself and others that his resolve and skill on the course were stronger than ever. Hillside Masters: Chidambazina triumphed over a competitive field, displaying maturity beyond his years and a level of play that made him stand out in Zimbabwe’s amateur scene. Manicaland Amateur: Perhaps his most impressive win, Chidambazina dominated the field with rounds of 70, 68, and 72, finishing 9-under par 210, a commanding eight strokes ahead of the nearest competitor. This victory demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure and his readiness to compete at the highest levels of amateur golf. (Newsday Zimbabwe)
Looking ahead, Chidambazina’s recent achievements have earned him a spot as one of the top contenders for the 2025 R&A African Amateur Championship, one of the most prestigious events in African amateur golf. The championship will bring together the best golfers from across the continent, with the winner earning a coveted place in The 153rd Open at Royal Portrush. Chidambazina’s impressive victories in 2024 have made him a name to watch as the tournament draws near. With his combination of talent, mental fortitude, and unwavering determination, he has the potential to make a deep run in the championship. His performance in the Africa Amateur Championship will be a true test of his skills, but also an opportunity for him to inspire others who have faced adversity, just as he has.
