WILLIAM Odek held his nerve to defeat John Lejirma on the third hole of sudden death and win the NCBA Nyali Open, played at Nyali Golf and Country Club in Mombasa, Kenya, on Sunday.
“I would have taken the title without play-offs if I did not miss the birdie at the 17th hole where Lejirma caught up with me, having taken the lead at the 11th hole. I am happy all the same that I was able to keep the Nyali Open trophy at home,” said Odek after his win (via Daily Nation). Odek said he has set his sights on becoming the country’s leading amateur golfer. He also expressed gratitude to his club members and Germany-based sponsor Universal Lighthouse, which has been supporting him along with five other players at the club. “Now that Lejirma is turning professional after next year’s Magical Kenya Open Golf Championship, I would like to work hard and take his place as the leading amateur in the country. I know I can do it if I keep practicing the way I have over the past few days,” he said. “I am humbled by the support I have received from the club members and our sponsors, Universal Lighthouse.” Odek opened the tournament with a level-par 71, followed by a two-over-par 73 on moving day, before closing with another 73. Lejirma, meanwhile, carded rounds of 72, 72 and 73, while John Kamaisi finished third on six-over-par 219 with round scores of 79, 64 and 76. Lejirma won the 2025 Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) Series. “It has been a good long year full of lessons not just for me but also for everyone who walked the journey with me. I look forward to playing the Magical Kenya Open next but I will just keep it simple and trust my swing,” said Lejirma (via Kenya Golf Guide).
The Nyali Open was the KAGC Series finale.
