A BRILLIANT second-round six-under-par 66 saw AJ van Emmenis move to the top of the leaderboard at the Nomads SA U15 Championship, taking place at Somerset West Golf Club in South Africa.

Emmenis’ superb performance included just one blemish, a double bogey at the fifth, as he carded the best round of the tournament so far. He now sits on four-under-par 140, one shot clear of second-placed Aiden Combrinck.

The 14-year-old, who opened with a 74 on Tuesday, surged from an overnight tie for eighth into the outright lead. He collected three consecutive birdies at the second, third and fourth holes before making a double bogey at the fifth for an outward 35. He then produced a flawless back nine, picking up a birdie at the 11th, followed by an eagle at the 12th and further birdies at the 13th and 14th for an inward 31. Overnight leader Demyan Burczak slipped to third place after returning a 73, while Combrinck maintained second position with a steady 70 on moving day. In the girls’ section, Amy Stanton leapfrogged Danielle Chong to take the lead after carding a second-round 77. Stanton, who began the day one shot behind Chong, now holds a one-shot advantage. Stanton is on 13-over-par 157, with Chong close behind on 14-over-par 158.

The third and final round will be played on Thursday.
