DEMYAN Burczak has made a solid start to the New Year, holding a two-shot lead over Aiden Combrinck after the opening round of the Nomads SA U15 Championship at Somerset West Golf Club in South Africa.

The 13-year-old from Ebotse Links opened the championship with an impressive three-under-par 69, while second-placed Combrinck carded a one-under-par 71.

Burczak had a mixed start to his round, opening with a birdie on the first hole, followed by a double bogey on the second, a birdie on the third, a bogey on the fourth and another birdie on the sixth to turn in 36. He then produced a flawless back nine, picking up birdies on holes 10, 16 and 18 for an inward 33. Second-placed Combrinck recorded five birdies and four bogeys, with four of his birdies coming during a flawless back nine. Four golfers, Jarryd Froy, Gerrie Oliver, Ernest Wessels (Jnr) and Joshua Moolman, are tied for third place on level-par 72. Danielle Chong leads the girls’ section on seven-over-par 79, one shot ahead of Amy Stanton on eight-over-par 80.

The second round is scheduled to take place on Wednesday.
