CASEY Jarvis is the latest golfer to join the Sunshine Tour winners’ circle following his one-stroke victory over close friend Ryan van Velzen at the Hyundai Open held at Ebotse Links in South Africa on Sunday.
Runner-up Van Velzen carded a 22-under-par 266. Speaking after his victory on a challenging final day, Jarvis said that finally breaking through after several close calls was an incredible feeling. “Winning is not easy and Ryan didn’t make it very easy for me. It’s hard beating a friend, and he’s a close friend of mine. But I am very happy with my win today. I was a bit nervous with that final putt, I won’t lie. I’ve had a few second places on tour, so to finally get it done is unbelievable,” said Jarvis. The South African professional began the tournament with a five-under-par 67, which included six birdies and one bogey. He picked up birdies on holes one, four, five, seven, 16 and 18, with his only blemish coming at the 13th. His second round was outstanding, producing an impressive nine-under-par 63 featuring eight birdies, an eagle, and a bogey. He enjoyed a remarkable run with six consecutive gains on his outward nine. Jarvis recorded three consecutive birdies on holes three, four, and five, followed by an eagle on the sixth and back-to-back birdies on the seventh and eighth. On the inward nine, he added birdies on holes 10, 13 and 16 while his only bogey came at the 11th hole. On moving day, Jarvis carded another 67 with six birdies and a single bogey. He made gains on holes one, two, four, eight, 11 and 18, dropping a shot on the seventh.
His closing 68 included five birdies and a bogey. He birdied holes one, three, 13, 14 and 15 with the lone bogey again coming on the seventh. For his victory, Jarvis earned 380.40 Order of Merit points.
