DANIEL Slabbert made a memorable debut on the Golf for the Disabled (G4D) Tour, claiming his first title in a play-off win against Joshua Exequiel Riccardo at the Betfred British Masters played at The Belfry Hotel & Resort, Sutton Coldfield, England.

The South African, a left leg amputee, secured victory by making par on the second play-off hole while Riccardo carded a bogey, sealing Slabbert’s maiden title in what was also the first Net-only event of the season.

Slabbert, who was trailing by two shots with two holes to play, birdied both number 17 and 18 for a closing one-over-par 74 to finish on four-over-par 150 having opened with a 76. Riccardo, who was the overnight leader birdied number 17 before dropping a shot on the 18th for a closing 75 as Slabbert forced a play-off. Riccardo had opened with a 75. For Slabbert, the victory was a surreal feeling. “I am absolutely delighted, especially with the play-off holes, I got a bit nervous out there. The tee shots are tight, especially holes were your second shots are not easy. So I was really nervous. So I am actually glad to be done with it. It's an absolutely amazing feeling to get it done,” he said. Slabbert also secured his spot at the 10-player G4D Tour Series Finale, which will be staged in conjunction with the Rolex Grand Final supported by The R&A at Club de Golf Alcanada, in Port d'Alcúdia, Mallorca, Spain on October 30 to November 1. The G4D Tour was making its return after a three-months break in its schedule, with five players making their first starts, including Marjan Gavez, the top-ranked player in the Net rankings. Gavez, of Slovenia finished tied for third with England’s Bradley Smith.

The G4D Tour was launched in 2022 as a partnership between the DP World Tour and EDGA (formally the European Disabled Golf Association). The G4D player pathway aims to cater for everyone with a disability who wants to play golf, and for many, the G4D Tour is seen as the pinnacle of competition with competitors playing on the same course, in the same week, as the leading Tour professionals on the DP World Tour. Due to the European Tour group’s ongoing financial support, EDGA has been able to raise awareness, confirm eligibility, organise tournaments, and deliver golf development and coach education worldwide.
