DANIEL van Tonder produced a brilliant final round to secure a two-shot victory over Wilco Nienaber and Allen John at The Serengeti Playoffs, held at Serengeti Estates on Sunday.

Van Tonder closed with an outstanding nine-under-par 63 to claim the championship on 21-under-par 267 and get his Courier Guy Playoffs Series campaign off to a perfect start.

Speaking after his win, Van Tonder said it was a relief to finally lift the trophy. “It means a lot. I’ve been playing this tournament a few times and have always just seen the trophy; now I finally have it in my trophy cabinet. Also, winning the pro-am on Saturday means a lot. I’ve been playing well and trying to find my game, and it seems like we’ve now found something. So I will take that forward. I am just very blessed and happy,” said Van Tonder (via Sunshine Tour). The South African professional dropped just a single shot in his final round, including a run of birdie, eagle and birdie over his last three holes that propelled him to the top. “It was fantastic. There was an opportunity and I could sense it. I attacked today and it worked out. I was very happy with the birdie-eagle-birdie finish. That putt on the 18th though, I had that putt a few times before and lost some cash missing it, so I knew the line,” he said. Having opened the tournament with a 70, followed by a 63 in the second round and a 71 in the third, Van Tonder went into the final day tied for third place with Nienaber, three shots behind John. He then had a flawless front nine, picking up four birdies at the second, third, fifth and ninth for an outward 32. After the turn, he added another birdie at the 11th, dropped a shot at the 13th but recovered with a birdie at the 14th. He then picked up a birdie at the 16th, eagled the 17th and birdied the 18th for an inward 31. It was his 13th win on the Sunshine Tour. John and Nienaber finished tied for second on 19-under-par 269.

The Serengeti Playoffs is the first of the two season-ending tournaments in The Courier Guy Playoff Series.
