SOUTH African professional Haydn Porteous has set the pace at the Mopani Zambia Open after taking a one-shot lead following the conclusion of the opening round at Nkana Golf Club.

Porteous carded a flawless opening five-under-par 67.

On his front nine, Porteous picked up a solitary birdie at the fourth hole to make the turn in one-under-par 35. After the turn, he added four more birdies. He birdied the 12th hole, followed by another at the 15th before finishing strongly with back-to-back birdies at the 17th and 18th holes for an inward 32. Martin Leon sits in second place on four-under-par 68 after an eventful opening round that featured seven birdies, a double bogey and a bogey. On his front nine, Leon picked up shots at the second, third, seventh and eighth holes before a double bogey at the ninth saw him go out in 34. On the back nine, he dropped a shot at the 13th but recovered impressively with three consecutive birdies at the 16th, 17th and 18th holes to come home in 34.

Rigardt Albertse and Pierre Viallaeix share third place on three-under-par 69 heading into the second round.
