QATARI teenage prodigy Daniil Sokolov produced a brilliant final round to secure a two-stroke victory over Baha Boulakmine at the relaunched 2025 Egyptian Amateur Open held at Dreamland Golf Club in Cairo on Saturday.
His triumph in the Egyptian capital came as little surprise. The in-form youngster had finished runner-up at the Bahrain Amateur Open just a week earlier, and in September, won the Jordan Open title. Sokolov led after the opening round with a three-under-par 69, before sharing the moving day lead with Boulakmine at three-under 141. On the final day, he produced a composed and commanding display to take the outright lead and seal the championship. He carded six birdies during his flawless round. He picked up his first birdie on the second hole, followed by back to back birdies on the fourth and fifth holes for an outward 33. On the back nine, Sokolov picked up back to back birdies on the 11th and 12th holes before closing off in style, with another birdie on the 18th to cap off a solid and brilliant performance. Boulakmine closed off with a four-under-par 68, carding seven birdies and three bogeys. In third place, there is Issa Abou El Ela and Rabeh Bedoui tied on one-under-par 215. The Egyptian Amateur Open returned to the calendar this year as part of the Arab Golf Series, in an initiative aimed at boosting the sport’s profile in Egypt and across the region, according to Omar Hisham Talaat, president of the Egyptian Golf Federation.
Talaat described the tournament’s revival as “a new beginning for golf in Egypt and the Arab world”, highlighting its tradition as a symbol of integrity, sportsmanship and national pride. The event’s inclusion in the Arab Golf Series marks a key step in the shared vision to elevate the status of Arab golf and grow the base of professional players.
