Van der Merwe had begun the second round just one shot off the pace, after opening with a 65 on Tuesday, trailing overnight leader LB Boshoff. His stunning second round featured nine birdies. On the outward nine, he picked up shots at the fifth, seventh and ninth holes. He then made successive birdies at the 11th and 12th, before making a hat-trick of birdies at the 14th, 15th, and 16th, and added another at the 18th. He, however, dropped shots at the par-three sixth and the par-four 10th holes. De Beer, who had opened with a 67, responded well with a second-round 64 that included eight birdies and two bogeys, keeping himself firmly in contention. In third place is Haydn Porteous, who followed up an opening 66 with another 66 on Wednesday, leaving him well placed heading into the final round. Overnight leader, Boshoff slipped down the leaderboard after a disappointing two-over-par 72, placing him in 13th on four-under-par 136. Following the conclusion of the second round, the cut was made. Notably, Jayden Hoskins, on one-over-par 141, is the only amateur to make it through to the final round.
