A par save on the play-off hole saw Ruben Van Der Berg beat Wandre Snyman to win the Betway Big Easy Tour 2 held at ERPM Golf Club in South Africa on Thursday.
Speaking after his victory, Van Der Berg said he was proud to have won the title while also giving credit to Snyman. “It was harder work than what I thought it was going to be towards the end, but credit to Wandre, he didn’t stop fighting. It’s just a shame about his bad luck on the play-off hole. I knew I had to dig deep somewhere. I’m grateful that it’s me, but it could easily have been him,” said Van Der Berg (via Big Easy Tour). Having opened the tournament with a five-under-par 67 on Tuesday, Van Der Berg was part of a four-way tie for first place alongside Daniel Smith, Snyman and Richard Kruger. On moving day, he carded a 70 to move to seven-under-par 137, sharing the lead with Eric Wowor and Snyman. He then closed with a three-under-par 69. In his final round, Van Der Berg had a flawless front nine, picking up three consecutive birdies at holes seven, eight and nine for an outward 33. After the turn, he produced a mixed performance, with a birdie at the 10th followed by a bogey at the 11th, before another birdie at the 13th was followed by a bogey at the 14th. He also birdied the 17th hole and dropped a shot at the 18th for an inward 36. Zachary Chegwidden finished in third place on eight-under-par 208 with rounds of 72, 68 and 68.
For his win, Van Der Berg earned 210 Big Easy Tour Order of Merit points, while second-placed Snyman received 172.50. Third-placed Chegwidden collected 116.70 points. The trio were the only players to earn more than 100 points.
