AN eagle on the first hole of sudden death saw Jayden Schaper secure a play-off victory over Shaun Norris to win the 2025 Alfred Dunhill Championship, held at Royal Johannesburg – East Course in South Africa on Sunday.
Schaper produced a brilliant shot in the play-off hole to win the championship. He first drove into a fairway bunker. He was then 238 metres from the heart of the green but clipped the sand perfectly to hit a magnificent approach which finished just over the putting surface. From three he rolled in the tricky downhill 15-footer he faced to secure the title, describing it as one of the best shots of his career. The championship, co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour, was played over 54 holes due to bad weather. Speaking after his magnificent victory Schaper said it is a special feeling to have won the championship. “It’s just so special, it’s been so close the last few weeks and probably the last couple of years. It’s a dream come true and its prayers answered. First there’s one thing I need to say, I just want to thank my Lord and saviour Jesus Christ, there’s only one reason I’m out here. “To my family, my friends, my coach, this is something I dreamed of. Shaun had an incredible round of golf to get into the play-off today but I got myself into the play-off. “If you told me at 16, that’s quite a tough par three, to chip in there for birdie, make a nice little birdie on 17, you always stay out there fighting and when I was in that play-off, it’s either Shaun or myself going to win so you just hit the shots and play attacking,” he said. He added: “It goes to last week as well and having massive support out there. To be in SA, playing in an event like this and obviously this week being close to home as well, it’s just so cool. You obviously travel a lot for golf throughout the year and you don’t really see your friends and family that much so to be able to do this and share this moment with them, it’s pretty cool. “If you look at the names on the trophy, it’s something you want to win. In 2020 I had the lead going down the back nine and it didn’t go my way but to come and to be standing here now, it’s incredible.” Schaper began the final round on 13-under-par 131, two shots behind leader Eugenio Chacarra. He closed with a three-under-par 67, not five-under, as the par-five sixth hole was converted into a par three for the final round due to the wet conditions. He birdied the first hole, dropped a shot on the second, then made a birdie and a bogey on the eighth and ninth holes respectively to turn in 35. He produced a flawless back nine, making three birdies in the final five holes, on the 14th, 16th and 17th holes. Norris closed with a 62, having earlier carded round scores of 67 and 69. Chacarra finished third on 15-under-par 199.
For the win, Schaper amassed 1 902 Order of Merit points while Norris got 1 320.
