Kelvin Muchenje at the Platinum Classic

KELVIN Muchenje breathed a huge sigh of relief after clinching the 2025 Platinum Classic in a play-off against Munesu Chimhini at Norton Country Club on Sunday.

Muchenje and Chimhini had finished tied on eight-over-par 224 after 54 holes, forcing a play-off which Muchenje ultimately won to secure his second title on the Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) calendar for 2025.

The victory in Norton came five months after his previous win at the Champion of Champions Golf Tournament, held at Roland Park Golf Club in June. Since then, the ZRP Golf Club member had endured a string of near-misses, regularly finishing inside the top five in most tournaments he entered. Speaking to Golf Africa after his win, Muchenje said he felt relieved to have finally got over the line, noting that his play-off experience at the Mzilikazi Classic in September proved invaluable when facing Chimhini. “It’s been a dry spell without winning after Champion of Champions. I just feel good, it’s a sigh of relief that I have made it at last. It’s like putting a signature on an essay that I have been working on for a very long time. Going into the play-off, I just told myself that I will win because I have been in such a situation before. I played against Michael Wallace at the Mzilikazi Classic and I just corrected the wrongs that I made in Bulawayo. So, there were no nerves, I am just glad that I finish the season with a win. Gratitude also goes to ZPCS, they make me play golf and I am thankful to them,” said Muchenje. Muchenje opened the season finale with a 74 and followed it with a 75 in Saturday afternoon’s second round, leaving him on five-over-par 149. He entered the third and final round two shots behind overnight leaders Toby Elis and Darlington Chikanyambidze, who were on three-over-par 147. He closed with another 75, taking the tournament into a play-off and eventually claiming victory.

Chimhini carded rounds of 77, 75, and 72. Blessing Gondo, Elis and Chikanyambidze finished tied for third on 10-over-par 226.
