SOUTH African amateur golfer, Maegan Webster carded a final round 75 to finish tied for position 48 at the 2025 R&A Girls Under-16 Amateur Championship at Gog Magog Golf Club in Cambridge, England. Organised by the R&A – the world governing body outside the Americas’ – the championship offered the world’s best juniors an opportunity to battle it out for the coveted silverware.

Webster, who finished on 14-over-par-227 was the only African golfer at the championship which had a strong field of 80 budding golfers drawn from across the world.

The 15 year old South African prodigy started the tournament with a two-over-par-73 in the first round. Her first round comprised of two birdies and four bogeys. She followed that up with a second round eight over-par-79 which took her to an overall 10-over-par-152. Webster shot a triple bogey on the par-four second hole before going to bogey the par-four third as well. Webster, however, made an eagle on the par-five seventh hole,, having previously bogeyed the par-four fourth as well. She would go on to make a double bogey, on the par-five eight hole. She made three more bogeys on the back nine. In the final round, Webster signed off for a four-over-par-75 with three birdies and seven bogeys to tie with Margaux Poissonnier (France), Daisy Lee, Elliana Buhagiar (Malta), Sara Ali (UAE), Yoo Yeung Bae (Germany) and Lena Geier (Germany).

Sabrina Wong made history by becoming the first player to win both the Girls’ U16 Amateur and the prize for the championship’s leading player under the age of 14. Wong (-10) registered a one stroke victory over Hannah Lee-McNamara (-9). Past winners of the coveted championship include major champions and Solheim Cup players such as Anna Nordqvist, Suzann Pettersen, Azahara Munoz and Georgia Hall. More recently, Slovenia's Pia Babnik triumphed in 2019 and has already gone on to win on the Ladies’ European Tour. The winner gains exemptions into the Women’s Amateur Championship, the US Girls’ Junior Championship, Final Qualifying for the AIG Women’s Open and by tradition, an invite to compete at Augusta National Women's Amateur Championship.
