FOLLOWING the conclusion of the 90th Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club, Charl Schwartzel was the best-performing player among the South African contingent at this year’s major.
The 2011 Masters champion, who has made the cut in five of his last six Masters tournaments, closed with a three-over-par 75. He had opened with a 75, followed by a second-round 73, his best round of the tournament, and a 77 on moving day. His closing 75 featured four birdies, at the sixth, eighth, 15th and 16th. He made bogeys at the second, fourth, 10th, 14th and 17th, while also recording a double-bogey at the third. Casey Jarvis and Aldrich Potgieter were the other two South Africans in the tournament and did not make the cut. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy made history by becoming the first player to win back-to-back Masters Tournaments since Tiger Woods in 2001 and 2002. He also became only the fourth player to win back-to-back titles, joining Jack Nicklaus (1965–66), Nick Faldo (1989–90) and Woods (2001–02). McIlroy (-12) secured a one-shot victory over Scottie Scheffler (-11). “I just can’t believe i waited 17 years to get one Green Jacket and i get two in a row,” said McIlroy. “I did want to come back here and prove last year wasn’t a fluke,” McIlroy added at the Green Jacket Ceremony.
Tyrell Hatton, Russell Henley, Justin Rose and Cameron Young shared third place on 10-under-par.
