Shepard Chiwaya's 2025 Harare Amateur winning poster

HOME course hero Shepard Chiwaya held his nerve to secure a play-off victory over Darlington Chikanyambidze, successfully defending his title at the 2025 Harare Amateur held at Wingate Golf Club in the capital over the weekend.

Chiwaya sealed the win with a birdie on the second play-off hole, making it back-to-back Harare Amateur titles after also triumphing in last year’s edition. Adding to the excitement, the victory marked his first win of the season.

The triumph on home soil was particularly sweet for Chiwaya, who had finished runner-up at the Bata Power Open in August, where he was edged out by Chikanyambidze. Speaking to Golf Africa, Chiwaya expressed his delight at retaining the championship and praised his composure under pressure in the play-off. “I am excited to have won the Harare Amateur this year as I was the defending champion. Home advantage definitely helped me as the course was playing tough due to wind. When I went to the play-off, I was a bit nervous but I had to calm myself down and make sure I don’t make mistakes. I knew that it was going to take atleast a birdie or two to win,” said Chiwaya. Chiwaya opened the tournament with a one-over-par 73 and followed it up with a 71 on round two. He closed off with another 71 to finish on one-under-par 215 and head to sudden death. Runner up Chikanyambidze carded round scores of 76, 68 and 71 while third placed Tom Sinclair carded scores of 73, 70 and 77 to finish on four-over-par 220. Miriam Masiya once again emerged as the top female golfer at the championship. The prodigious talent carded 11-over-par 227 to claim the ladies’ top honours. On the overall combined leaderboard, she secured a top-10 finish, ending tied for eighth.

The next event on the Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) calendar is the Mashonaland East Amateur, scheduled for Marondera Golf Club on November 1 and 2. The Harry Allen Classic will follow at Harry Allen Golf Club in Bulawayo on November 15 and 16 before the Platinum Classic scheduled for Norton Golf Club on November 29 and 30 concludes what has been an action packed 2025 season.
