SOUTH Africa, tied for 16th position, is the highest-placed African nation after the first round of the 2025 Women's World Amateur Team Championships (WATC), taking place at Tanah Merah Country Club in Singapore.
The two lowest scores from each team contribute to the overall team score for each round. The two counting scores for South Africa in the opening round came from Megan Streicher and Bobbi Brown. Streicher carded a one-under-par 71, while Brown opened with a four-over-par 76. The third South African player, Kyra van Kan opened with a five-over-par 77. Streicher’s opening round featured three birdies and two bogeys. She picked up birdies on holes number three, seven and 15 while dropping shots on number eight and 18. Brown’s round comprised three birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey. She birdied number five, 13 and 16 while shooting bogeys on number six, 10, 12, 17 and 18. Her double bogey was on the fourth hole. Van Kan’s first round saw her shoot two birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey. On the individual leaderboard, Streicher is the highest-placed African golfer, tied for 15th position, four shots behind the leader, Farah O’Keefe, who sits on five-under-par 67. Brown is tied for 61st, while Van Kan is tied for 68th. Morocco holds a team score of nine-over-par 153 with Sofia Cherif Essakali and Rim Imni contributing to the total. Essakali carded four-over-par 76 and is tied for position 61 on the individual leaderboard. Imni signed for an opening five-over-par 77 which left her tied for position 68. Maria Eidhagen Harrouch is the third Moroccan player and opened with a 12-over-par 84, tied for position 98.
Kenya finished the day with a team score of 20-over-par 164. Kanana Muthomi and Kellie Gachaga each carded scores of 10-over-par 82. On the individual leaderboard, the two are tied for position 95 while their teammate, Ashley Awuor shot 14-over-par 86 and is in position 105.
