A STRONG competitive field is expected to take to the greens for the 2025 edition of the Zimbabwe Matchplay scheduled to take place at Police Golf Club in Harare starting on Friday.
If any of the top 64 OoM players are unavailable, their spots are filled by the top 16 finishers at the Zimbabwe Amateur, who are not already qualified via OoM (in descending order based on final position). If the field is still short, it will be filled with the next best OoM players outside the top 64. Players are expected to have confirmed their registration by midday on Thursday. In an interview, Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) administrator Tirivashe Nheweyembwa said all is place for the place for the tournament with their preparations well on course. “Our preparations are going on very well. Adding to the excitement is that we have been able to get a sponsor for the tournament from Energy Park Bulk Fuels, we are grateful. It shows that we are getting there. The whole idea of this tournament is to expose our players to Matchplay, which is a different game to Strokeplay. Matchplay teaches you how to think, you play the opponent, not necessarily the course. “We are excited and ready to go and we are making sure that everything goes according to plan. This is a serious event, there are World Amateur Golf Ranking points up for grabs. On top of it, Nathan (Van Rooyen) will play, he made history, becoming the youngest player to win the Zimbabwe Amateur. It will be interesting and registration closes at 1pm on Thursday,” said Nheweyembwa. As per terms of competition, withdrawals after publication of draw will be replaced by the next eligible player in the OoM or Zimbabwe Amateur list. If withdrawal occurs a round starts, it is deemed a walkover. The round of 64 will be held on Friday morning followed by the round of 32 in the afternoon. These will be straight knockout rounds.
OoM ranking points will be awarded from the round of 16 which is scheduled for Saturday morning. The quarter finals will take place on Saturday afternoon. The tournament concludes on Sunday with the semi-finals in the morning followed by the final and third-place play-off in the afternoon. Eighteen-hole matches will be played until the final with ties settled by sudden death play-off from hole one or from a designated loop as decided by the convener. In terms of seeding, seed number one plays number 64, seed number two plays number 63 and so on.
