THE Kenyan Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) chairperson, Rosemary Mkok has hailed Kenya’s two-stroke victory at the 2025 East and Central All Africa Challenge Trophy (EACAACT), a premier women’s golf championship for East and Central African nations, describing it as a special moment for the country.

The event, hosted for the first time in Kenya at the Great Rift Valley Lodge and Golf Resort in Naivasha, saw the home team make history by ensuring the coveted trophy stayed on home soil.

Kenya finished on 17-over-par 443 after 54 holes of golf, edging out La Réunion Island (19-over-par 445) to cap a phenomenal display in front of the home crowd. “Kenya has made history today. This is the first time we are hosting the EACAACT championship here in Kenya. A huge thank you to our phenomenal players Joyce Wanjiru, Mercy Nyanchama and Kanana Muthomi (Jnr.) who gave it their all and ensured the EACAACT trophy remained in Kenya. “We are extremely proud of the trio. A big thank you to all Kenyans who cheered team Kenya on. To our guest from the region who were very worthy competitors asanteni sana and welcome to Kenya again,” said Mkok. At one stage during the final round, Réunion held a two-shot lead over the hosts, but Kenya held their nerve under pressure to fight back and secure the title. There were standout performances on the final day. Wanjiru dramatically holed a 63-foot putt for par from a bunker on the 18th while Nyanchama holed out for birdie from the bunker on the 17th. Thirteen-year-old Muthomi also held firm with a par on the 17th, while the La Réunion players faltered with bogeys. On the individual leaderboard, Wanjiru, Muthomi, and Nyanchama finished third, fourth, and fifth respectively, proudly flying the host nation’s flag high at the prestigious event. Kenya opened the championship with a nine-over-par 151, with Wanjiru and Muthomi contributing to the team score. Wanjiru carded two-over-par 73, while Muthomi shot seven-over-par 78. Nyanchama returned a 79, with the two lowest scores counting towards the team total. In the second round, the hosts impressed with a one-under-par 141, again with Wanjiru and Muthomi contributing. Muthomi posted one-under-par 70 with three birdies and two bogeys, while Wanjiru made level-par 71 featuring six birdies and as many bogeys. Nyanchama carded a 78. In the final round on Friday, Kenya closed with another nine-over-par 151, with Nyanchama and Wanjiru contributing to the team’s final tally. Nyanchama shot three-over-par 74 (three birdies, three bogeys, and a triple bogey), while Wanjiru carded 77 (two birdies, two bogeys, and three double bogeys). Muthomi closed with a 79. Tanzania finished third on 34-over-par 460. On the individual leaderboard, Réunion’s Melliyal Schmitt claimed top honours on one-under-par 212 with Tanzania’s Neema Olomi finishing runner-up on seven-over-par 220, one shot ahead of Wanjiru in third on eight-over-par 221.

The 2025 EACAACT brought together top female golfers from Madagascar, Réunion, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Kenya. The biennial regional championship fosters excellence, sportsmanship, and unity through golf, strengthening regional ties and empowering women in sport.
