THRISTON Lawrence delivered a remarkable final-round fightback to post a closing four-under-par 66 and become a two-time winner of the Omega European Masters, securing a two-stroke victory over Rasmus Højgaard, Matt Wallace, and Sami Välimäki at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, on Sunday.
Lawrence finished on 22-under-par 258 and etched his name onto the record books along the way. No golfer has shot lower over 72 holes at the Omega European Masters than Lawrence score since Eduardo Romero in 2003 (-23). This became his fifth DP World Tour title in his 117th appearance, coming two years and 67 days after his most recent victory worldwide at the 2023 BMW International Open. Lawrence is one of seven South African golfers to have won the Omega European Masters, alongside Ernie Els, Jeff Hawkes, Hugh Baiocchi, Dale Hayes, Harold Henning and Bobby Locke. This was also the fourth win by a player from South Africa on the 2025 Race to Dubai, joining Shaun Norris (Alfred Dunhill Championship), Jacques Kruyswijk (Magical Kenya Open presented by Absa) and Dylan Naidoo (Investec South African Open Championship). Lawrence’s triumph also turned out to be the 175th win by players from South Africa on the DP World Tour. “Winning is tough. It's not easy. I was so nervous all day. It always looks so easy but it's not. I'm just so emotional, so happy. It's been a grind all day. Obviously after that start - I tried to give the guys a chance there! But yeah, I'm just so proud of the way I fought out there. “Credit to my team and all my sponsors. I'm just so happy. Just to have some sort of family here is incredible. All my family back home that's been supporting me through all the years. Just thank you to them. And yeah, it's nice to have someone here,” said Lawrence whose partner was in Switzerland. Lawrence started the tournament with a bogey-free seven-under-par 63 in the first round, carding seven birdies. He then followed it up with a four-under-par 66 in the second round. He eagled the par-five 14th hole while also shooting four birdies and two bogeys. On moving day, Lawrence dropped a single shot on hole number two but carded eight birdies, including five consecutive on holes number five to nine for another 63.
Starting the final day with a two-shot lead, Lawrence bogeyed his three opening holes, dropping two shots behind. He managed to fight back, shooting an eagle on the par-four sixth hole and adding five birdies to close his round. With his victory, he also Jumped 79 places on the Race to Dubai Rankings, moving from 98th to 19th with 1,220.31 points and climbed to 68th in the Official World Golf Ranking, from 94th.
