TYRONE Ryan produced a memorable opening round to take the lead at the Blu Label Unlimited Challenge, a tournament being played across two courses at Sun City Resort, the Gary Player Country Club and Lost City Golf Course.
The tournament is being contested using the Modified Stableford format, where an albatross is eight points while an eagle is five. A birdie is two points with an even-par being zero. A bogey is -1 while a double bogey, or worse, is -3 points. Ryan opened the tournament in remarkable fashion, with an eagle on the first hole for five points, followed by a birdie on the fourth to add two more points. He then collected six points in his last four holes on the front nine thanks to three consecutive birdies on holes number six, seven and eight, giving him 13 points on the outward nine. On the back nine, Ryan added four more points to his tally with birdies on the 11th and 14th holes. He then closed off in remarkable fashion with an eagle on the 18th, bringing in five more points to complete his round with nine points on the inward nine, and 22 points overall.
Keenan Davidse and Hennie du Plessis are tied for second place with 13 points apiece. The duo played identical rounds, both carding an eagle, six birdies and four bogeys.
