World Amateur Team Championship
Brandon Moyo
A FLAWLESS opening round six-under-par 66 saw Christiaan Maas make a brilliant start to his 2025 World Amateur Team Championship (WATC) campaign, taking place at Tanah Merah Country Club in Singapore.
Ranked sixth in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), Maas carded four birdies and an eagle in a composed and clinical round. His first birdie came at the third hole, followed by another at the fifth. He closed out the front nine in spectacular fashion, with an eagle on the eighth and a birdie on the ninth for an outward 31. On the back nine, Maas added another birdie on hole number 12 before shooting level-par on the remaining holes to cap off a dominant performance. Three African nations are competing at the Eisenhower Trophy with the other two being Morocco and Zimbabwe. Following Maas, Morocco’s Adam Bresnu is the second best placed African on the individual leaderboard, tied for position 15 on one-under-par 71. South Africa’s Daniel Bennett is tied for position 35 on one-over-par 73 with Charl Barnard, also from South Africa and Zimbabwe’s Darlington Chikanyambidze tied for 67th on three-over-par 75. Morocco’s Hugo Mazen Trommetter is tied for position 86 on four-over-par 76. Zimbabwe’s 14-year-old Munesu Chimhini is in position 103 on eight-over-par 80, followed by Morocco’s Alex El Khomri tied for position 104 on nine-over-par 81. Zimbabwe’s Elton Zulu sits in position 107 with a score of 11-over-par 83. On the team leaderboard, South Africa is the highest placed African side with a team score of five-under-par 139, just two shots behind Mexico on seven-under-par 137. The total of the two lowest scores from each team constitutes the team score for the round and for South Africa, it was Maas and Bennett who contributed. Morocco is tied for position 25 on three-over-par 147 with Bresnu and Trommetter contributing to the team’s total. Zimbabwe is in position 35 on 11-over-par 155 courtesy of scores from Chikanyambidze and Chimhini.
The championship is a 72-hole event.
