ZIMBABWE will join 35 other nations at the 2025 World Amateur Team Championship (WATC) scheduled for Tanah Merah Country Club in Singapore from October 8 to 11.

They become the third African nation after Uganda and South Africa to compete for this year's Eisenhower Trophy. The tournament is for the top 36 golfing nations in the world.

Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) president Blessmore Gandawa said it is an honour to have the national team compete on the global stage, adding that they did not qualify by chance but through hard work and determination. “As Zimbabwe Golf Association we are proud to announce that our national team has qualified for the World Amateur Team Championship. This is the World Cup for amateur golf. We are happy to announce that Zimbabwe is among the top 36 nations in the world. This is the world cup for the amateur golfers and it is the highest that a golfer can reach when they are amateur players. This is also the highest competition that a team can participate in because when they turn professional, there is no world cup but only Majors such as the Open Championship, the US Open and others and they compete as individuals and not teams. “Zimbabwe will be sending a team comprising three players and two officials, a coach and a head of delegation. The competition will only have 36 countries and the format of play will be stroke play over four rounds. The road to qualification was based on local, regional and international World Amateur Golf Ranking tournaments that our amateur golfers participate in,” said Gandawa. He added: “Our qualification is not only a source of joy and pride to the generality of the population, but it also presents the local corporate world with an unmatched and unparalleled opportunity to partner us as they stand to benefit from brand expose to the global market. It is in this regard that I would like to appeal to the captains of Industry to consider partnering with us so that together we can expose Zimbabwe to the entire global stage. “Like they say it takes two to tangle. We cannot clearly go it alone but we need corporate support so that our team will be a marvel to watch and the lasting impressions that it will leave on and off the course will live on as a result of the collaboration and support that we would have received.” The ZGA president also expressed gratitude to all the players who participate in local tournaments, saying their efforts are not in vein. He also thanked coaches and parents who always support the players. National golf team head Simon Murungweni said they will be using the latest technology to simulate the course and pre-study the terrain, course layout and greens among other things.

While drawing inspiration from the Zimbabwe’s national rugby team who qualified for the 2027 World Cup, Gandawa said they are also looking to better their previous best sixth place finish with a podium finish at this year’s championship. Gandawa also advised that the selection process of the players to represent Zimbabwe has started and the team will be announced in due course.
