IVAN Verster has taken a one-shot lead over Ethan Gough after the second round of the Western Province Amateur Championship taking place at Milnerton Golf Club in Cape Town, South Africa on Tuesday.

Verster carded a second round two-under-par 68 to open a slender lead at the top of the leaderboard. He is now on an overall six-under-par 138.

He had gone into the second round sharing the lead with Timothy Daniels and Janko van der Merwe after they had all posted opening rounds of four-under-par 66 on Monday. Daniels and Van der Merwe are now in a three-way tied for fourth place alongside Noah Lamb. During Tuesday’s play, Verster shot four birdies and two bogeys. He opened with a par on the first hole followed by a bogey on the second. He made another bogey on the seventh but managed to recover with a birdie on the eighth hole. On the inward nine, Verster made back to back birdies on the 10th and 11th holes before carding his final on the 17th hole. He did not drop a shot in the back nine.

Second placed Gough, who moved up two places from round one, is on five-under-par 135 with round scores of 68 and 67. In third place there is Cole Cruickshank on four-under-par 136 with round scores of 69 and 67.
