SOUTH African professional golfer JC Ritchie described his latest victory at the Open de Portugal at Royal Óbidos as an amazing feeling, saying he has always aspired to claim the tournament’s top honours.

Ritchie signed for a near-flawless closing five-under-par 66, finishing on 15-under-par 269 to register a one-stroke victory over David Law. It was also his second HotelPlanner Tour title in 2025, having earlier won the German Challenge supported by VcG.

Speaking after his victory, Ritchie shared the emotions of his success. “It’s an unbelievable feeling. I’ve always enjoyed coming here and always wanted to win this tournament. From twelve onwards were where the scores stagnated and there were a couple of tough holes coming in and I had an unbelievable finish. “The 15th hole was crazy, and we all felt that was going to be a tough hole today. I managed to escape there with a bogey, knowing I was going to drop out the lead. I then managed a good birdie on 16 then chipped one in on 17 before hitting one close on the last and making the putt. I sort of had a feeling I was two or three ahead if I made the putt, I wasn’t really trying to make birdie but my hands kind of took over,” said Ritchie. Following the victory, he also moved six places up on the Road to Mallorca rankings and has his eyes set on taking over the top spot. “I think after the win in Germany I felt like the job was pretty much done for next year. I am glad that it’s pretty much confirmed and that I can focus on trying to finish in the top five and even end the year as Number One,” he said. Before the start of the 2025 season, Ritchie’s four HotelPlanner Tour victories had all come in and winning outside of home is a result of hard work. “It means a huge amount to win twice outside of South Africa this year. It’s been a tough one to deal with winning two of the events in SA and then coming out here and never finish inside the top 20. I put in a lot of hard work last year and it seems to have paid off,” said Ritchie. The 31 year old began the tournament with a one-under-par 70 which left him tied for position 53, six shots behind overnight leader Lars Van Meijel who had opened with a 64. He then followed it up with a brilliant five-under-par 66 in the second round, carding four birdies, one eagle and one bogey to climb to a tie for 10th on the leaderboard. In the third round, Ritchie shot four-under-par 67, moving to a tie for fifth place. He went into the final round on 10-under, three shots behind leader, Law. His closing round featured six birdies, including three in a row in his final three holes, having made bogey on number 15, enough to see him secure the championship. Law carded one-under-par 71 in the final round.

Next up on the HotelPlanner Tour is the Italian Challenge Open at Golf Nazionale, Sutri, Italy starting on Thursday.
