THE Sunshine Tour will head to Zimbabwe next month for one of its most anticipated stops on the calendar, the FBC Zimbabwe Open.
The event will be the second tournament of the season following the conclusion of the Mediclinic Invitational at Heron Banks Golf and River Estate on Saturday. Once again, the tournament is expected to attract a strong field of both local and international players as the new season gathers momentum. With its rich history and reputation, the FBC Zimbabwe Open remains a key highlight for players looking to make an early impact on the campaign, with the storied Royal Harare Golf Club providing a stern but fair test. Local players will be eager to capitalise on home advantage, with Zimbabwean professionals and leading amateurs aiming to break a more than two-decade jinx and challenge for top honours in front of their home crowd. The last time a Zimbabwean claimed the Zimbabwe Open title was in 2000, when Mark McNulty secured a one-stroke victory over South Africa’s Jean Hugo in what was then known as the CABS/Old Mutual Zimbabwe Open.
Last year’s tournament was won by Mexican professional Luis Carrera, who registered a four-shot victory over Australia’s Austin Bautista. It was Carrera’s maiden victory on the Sunshine Tour, coming in his first start after winning the Qualifying School.
