THE ongoing Sunshine Tour season has been a memorable one so far for South African professional Jonathan Broomhead who has delivered a series of outstanding performances on the fairways and greens of various courses.
His two runner-up finishes came at the Gary and Vivienne Player Challenge, where he lost in a play-off to Malcolm Mitchell after both players finished tied on 12-under-par 204, and at the Kit Kat Cash and Carry Pro-Am, where he was part of a four-way tie for second. He was tied with Oliver Bekker, Trevor Fisher Jr, and Gerhard Pepler on 20-under-par 268, 10 strokes behind winner Luis Carrera. Last week, he claimed his first win of the season with a play-off victory at the SunBet Challenge hosted by Time Square at Wingate Park Country Club. He defeated Jean-Paul Strydom on the first hole of sudden death, earning his fourth Sunshine Tour title in just 16 months. Broomhead, a former GolfRSA number one and national squad graduate, turned professional in 2023 and went on to claim three titles on Tour in 2024, the Tour Championship by The Courier Guy, the Vodacom Origins of Golf at Wild Coast, and the Blue Label Challenge.
He also made a strong debut on the Sunshine Tour, finishing eighth in his first-ever event at the FBC Zimbabwe Open. In the 2024/25 season, Broomhead notched up eight top-10 finishes, solidifying his status as an elite professional. On the current season’s Order of Merit, Broomhead has accumulated 833.16 points, trailing Herman Loubser who leads with 943.14 points.
