ONE of Zimbabwe’s leading professional golfers, Kieran Vincent, produced a remarkable comeback to secure his second Sunshine Tour title with a four-stroke victory at the Waterfall City Tournament of Champions, supported by Attacq and WCMC, at Royal Johannesburg on Sunday. Vincent signed for a closing round of 70, which included a nine on the par-four third hole, finishing on an overall 18-under-par 270, four shots clear of Daniel van Tonder, who closed on 14-under-par 274. Van Tonder also carded a final-round 70, while Pieter Moolman secured third place at 13-under-par 275 following a final round of 69.

Fresh off his title defence at last week’s Kit Kat Cash and Carry, which was ultimately won by Luis Carrera, Vincent was in blistering form. He didn’t drop a single shot in the third round, carding a jaw-dropping 61 to seize control of the leaderboard. His remarkable third round consisted of 11 birdies.

After opening with a steady 70, Vincent made the cut with a solid second round 69, then soared into contention with his Saturday masterclass. He followed that up with a final round 70 to close out the tournament on an 18 under-par 270, finishing four shots clear of seasoned campaigner Daniel van Tonder. “Well the first one went out of bounds and the second one followed suit. Once the second one goes out of bounds you start to get really nervous. But me and my team have been taking about fighting for a while, and that’s what was ringing in my head. Walking off the third green towards the fourth tee, I told myself the only way we can go through this is if we fight,” Vincent said of his experience on the third. The Zimbabwean did just that and rolled in seven birdies over the composite nine-hole setup for this tournament to carry him to the title. “Credit to my team throughout the last couple of months for instilling a lot in me to be able to fight like the way we did today. A lot goes on when you play a nine-hole loop and it’s my first time doing that. I really enjoyed it. All in all, it was a great day,” he said.
