Luis Carrera during the 2025 FBC Zimbabwe Open

LUIS Carrera, winner of the Sunshine Tour Qualifying School in April and current leader of the 2025 FBC Zimbabwe Open, has expressed his fondness for the tour, citing the abundance of tournaments and overall affordability. The Mexican professional golfer is currently enjoying a one-stroke lead at the top of the leaderboard on -14 going into Sunday’s final round. In second place is Australian Austin Bautista, also a Qualifying School graduate, sitting at -13.

“I really like that this tour has a lot of events. You play so many events throughout the year. I like that because it keeps you in play. It also gives you the opportunity to go to the DP World Tour and Challenge Tour. That’s very important too. The flight to here can be a little expensive but other than that its very good, it’s not very expensive, the entry fees are good, traveling is not that expensive because it’s just around South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, so that’s pretty good,” said Carrera.

Playing in the Zimbabwe Open for the first time, and also visiting the country for the first time, Carrera has been charmed by the hospitality and climate. The FBC Zimbabwe Open is the first tournament of the 202526 Sunshine Tour season. “It’s my first time in Zimbabwe. Everything has been great, the weather is just perfect, not too hot and not too cold. There are clear skies which is very good. The people have been super nice, I love how they been treating me. On the course, they have been supporting me,” he said. Reflecting on his performance so far, Carrera noted consistency across the first three rounds, highlighting his second round as his best. “The last three days have been good. I have been playing good golf all around. The three rounds have been very similar but the second was the one I played the better. I like it (pressure), that’s what I trained for, I would rather be right there as a leader or close to the lead than not playing well. I do like this better,” Carrera said.

Carrera hopes to return to play in the Zimbabwe Open again, depending on whether he retains his Sunshine Tour card. He is set to tee off at 11:36 alongside Bautista for the final round.
