THE country’s leading female amateur golfer, Miriam Masiya, has taken the early lead at the Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union (ZLGU) Ladies Strokeplay, which teed off at The Brooke Golf Club at Borrowdale Brooke Golf Estate in Harare on Friday.

The teenage sensation opened with a one-under-par 71 and holds a four-shot lead over Batsirai Tilowakuti, who carded a 75.

Masiya had a flawless front nine, picking up two birdies at the sixth and ninth holes for an outward 34. After the turn, she dropped shots at the 10th and 11th before adding another birdie at the 12th. She then bogeyed the 14th and birdied the 18th for an inward 37.

In second place, Tilowakuti’s round comprised one birdie and four bogeys. She picked up her solitary birdie at the 14th while dropping shots at the second, ninth, 15th and 18th.

Priscilla Makurumure sits in third place after opening with a 79, while Tracy Humbura, Gracious Mwenda and Joanie Mason share fourth place after opening with 81s.

Modester Masiya and South Africa’s C. Joiynt are tied for seventh on 83, followed by Priscilla Nyatsanga and South Africa’s A. Nsana on 84.
