WITH anticipation mounting for the 2025 FBC Zimbabwe Open, 10 more golfers secured their places in the tournament following the conclusion of the Pre-Qualifier event held at Royal Harare Golf Club on Sunday.
They joined an amateurs list which had Tanaka Chatora, Michael Wallace, Keegan Shutt, Kelvin Muchenje, Darlington Chikanyambidze, Devon Valentine and Tawana Mangoma. The other six golfers who qualified from the Pre-Qualifier are Liam Grehan (-2), David Meyers (-1), Tyrone Davidowitz (-1), Eric Wowor (level-par), Simon Murungweni (level-par) and Pierre Viallaneix (+1). Li, who secured the final qualification slot said it is an honour to have gotten the opportunity to play the Zimbabwe Open. “Zimbabwe is my home so to be able to play the national Open is an absolute pleasure. Its the most pressure I have ever felt (play-off) but I just had to stay patient and trust myself and play my own game and don’t worry about what they’re doing because anything can happen in golf. I just stayed compsed and to get it done feels amazing,” he said. This year’s edition of the Zimbabwe Open is scheduled to run from May 8-11 with a competitive field of at least 144 golfers taking to the greens and fairways of the picturesque Royal Harare Golf Club. The tournament is also the 2025/26 Sunshine Tour season opener. “The 2025 edition of the Zimbabwe Open promises to be bigger and better than ever before. With a fantastic field of professional golfers from both Zimbabwe and beyond, we are confident that this year’s tournament will continue to raise the profile of Zimbabwe as a premier golfing destination and further cement the Zimbabwe Open’s position as a key event on the Sunshine Tour,” said Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) president Martin Chikwana. The official course handover took place on Monday, marking the formal commencement of proceedings. Title sponsors, FBC Holdings poured in US$200 000 in prize fund, making the Zimbabwe Open one of the top events on the Sunshine Tour. This edition will, however, go beyond the fairways with plans in place to lay a charitable foundation for a national movement.
The 2025 FBC Zimbabwe Open will see the launch of The Zim Open Wellness Fund whose strategic objectives are to build public awareness around key health and wellness issues and position partner brands as collaborative leaders in health, sport, and social change. For this year, this noble initiative will focus on cancer awareness and treatment and in 2026, the focus will be on mental health. This will be supported by members of the Zim Open Committee, sponsors and partners.
