SOUTH African professional Tyrone Ryan secured a hard-fought, come-from-behind, one-stroke victory at the Betway Big Easy Tour 3 event, held at The Wanderers Golf Club in Sandton, South Africa, on Thursday.

The one-time Sunshine Tour winner carded a final-round one-under-par 70 to reach nine-under overall, finishing one shot ahead of Brandon Pieters and Joe Sullivan to claim a long-awaited triumph. Only three shots separated the top 10 players. He finished on nine-under-par 204.

“This win means a lot. I’ve been playing good golf. My game has been solid, but I just haven’t been able to put three or four rounds together in the bigger events. Getting the first two rounds in this week was great because then you’re not chasing the whole time. “So, I knew today I just had to play solidly. The course was set up tough, the wind was gusting, so I knew I had to keep it steady, and luckily, I got the birdie on the last,” said Ryan. He opened the tournament with a three-under-par 68, which included six birdies and three bogeys. He then followed it up with an impressive five-under-par 66 in the second round, recording six birdies and just one bogey, on the par-three 17th hole. The third and final round proved to be a tense contest. Tied at eight-under with Sullivan and with Pieters, already in the clubhouse, Ryan approached the 18th tee knowing a birdie or better would hand him outright victory and avoid a sudden-death play-off.

Sullivan was unable to birdie the last, but Ryan calmly rolled in his birdie putt from around eight to ten feet after a precise approach shot, ending a winless run spanning more than five years. “Auto-pilot, that’s the word. I just thought I needed to stay calm. I think I’ve learnt a lot over the last few years about how lucky we are just to be out on the golf course. Even on bad days, you’ve got to enjoy it, and when good days like this come, you’ve got to keep going,” he added. The Betway Big Easy Tour is the feeder circuit to the Sunshine Tour.
