THE future of Zimbabwean golf looks promising after a group of six talented youngsters, all under the age of 15 stole the spotlight at this year’s Zimbabwe Amateur held at Chapman Golf Club in Harare this past weekend.

The youngest in the field was 12 year old Casey Chabveka, who became the youngster ever to play in the country’s flagship championship. Nathan Van Rooyen, at 15, made history, becoming the youngest ever to win the Zimbabwe Amateur.

Mikail Ahmed and Nathaniel Zidya, both 13 years old were joined by three 14 year olds, Nyasha Chikanyambidze, Mukudzei Sekeso and Munesu Chimhini. This marked the highest number of young players to feature in Zimbabwe’s flagship amateur championship. The youngsters’ presence was not merely symbolic, they were highly competitive. Chimhini finished in third place, on nine-over-par, four strokes behind the champion Van Rooyen while Sekeso secured a 12th place finish on 19-over-par. The 12-year-old Chabveka carded 50-over while Ahmed shot 102-over with Chikanyambidze shooting 126-over. This remarkable feat underlines the growing strength of junior golf development in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) officials expressed pride in the emerging crop, calling them “the next generation of champions.”

This year’s Zimbabwe Amateur became a platform where young prodigies announce their arrival. If their performances are anything to go by, Zimbabwe’s golfing future is in safe hands.
