WITH the Stella Artois Players Championship set to tee off at Randpark Golf Club on Thursday, defending champion Heinrich Bruiners is hoping to rediscover his form as he seeks to reclaim the title he won at Dainfern Country Club last year.

Last year’s win was Bruiners’ first 72-hole championship victory and the second title of his Sunshine Tour career.

Speaking to the Sunshine Tour, Bruiners reflected on how, after last year’s success, his pursuit of improvement led him off course. He explained that he had made several changes to his game and equipment but is now returning to what feels most natural. “I reached such a high when I won this tournament last year. But then I got a bit lost in my search for improvement. I’ve gone through so many changes. I changed the way I played to match the equipment that I wanted to use, whereas now I’m getting back to what I do naturally and the equipment that suits me. Whenever I’ve played my best has been when I’ve felt like I’m expressing who I am through my golf,” said Bruiners. The defending champion added that he is working towards returning to a set-up and approach that feels familiar, while acknowledging the strength of this year’s field. “I’m actually trying to work my way back to what I was using equipment wise and doing before. I think I just need to get back to what’s familiar for me. It’s so competitive out here and everybody else is getting better. I just need to find my way back to what I know is right for me,” he said.

A competitive field of 137 golfers will take part at the championship.
